Local SEO for Removalists: How to Get Found on Google in Your Area

When someone needs a removalist, the first thing they do is search Google. "Removalists near me," "movers in [suburb]," "moving company [city]." If your business doesn't show up in those results, you're invisible to your best potential customers. Here's how to fix that.

Set up your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important thing you can do for local visibility. It's what shows up in the map pack — those three business listings with the map that appear at the top of local searches.

To set it up properly:

  • Claim your listing at business.google.com if you haven't already
  • Use your real business name — don't stuff keywords into it (Google penalises this)
  • Add your service area — list every suburb and city you cover
  • Choose the right category — "Moving company" as primary, "Removalist" as secondary
  • Add your hours, phone number, and website
  • Upload photos — your truck, your crew, completed jobs. Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests.

Update your profile regularly. Post updates, respond to questions, and keep your hours current. Google rewards active profiles with higher rankings.

Get reviews — and respond to every one

Reviews are the biggest ranking factor for local search after your GBP listing itself. More reviews with higher ratings means higher visibility.

How to get more reviews:

  • Ask at the right moment — send an SMS with a review link within 2 hours of completing a job, while the customer is still happy
  • Make it easy — send a direct link to your Google review page, not a generic "leave us a review" message
  • Ask consistently — every single job, not just the ones that went perfectly

Respond to every review — positive and negative. A thoughtful response to a negative review shows future customers you care. Keep it professional, acknowledge the issue, and offer to make it right.

VanMan's SMS templates let you send a review request automatically after every completed job. Set it up once and reviews start coming in without you having to remember.

Build local citations

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites. Consistent citations across the web help Google verify your business is legitimate and local.

Key directories for Australian removalists:

  • Yellow Pages (yellowpages.com.au)
  • TrueLocal (truelocal.com.au)
  • Oneflare (oneflare.com.au)
  • Hipages (hipages.com.au)
  • Yelp Australia (yelp.com.au)
  • Hotfrog (hotfrog.com.au)
  • Start Local (startlocal.com.au)

Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are exactly the same across every listing. "Unit 5, 123 Main St" on one site and "5/123 Main Street" on another confuses Google. Pick one format and stick with it everywhere.

Create location-specific pages on your website

If you serve multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each one. Instead of a single "Areas We Serve" page with a list of suburbs, create individual pages like:

  • /removalists-sydney-cbd
  • /removalists-north-shore
  • /removalists-western-sydney
  • /removalists-wollongong

Each page should have unique content about serving that area — mention local landmarks, common move types in the area, and estimated travel times. Don't just copy the same text with the suburb name swapped out. Google sees through that.

Optimise your website for mobile

Over 70% of "near me" searches happen on mobile phones. If your website is slow or hard to use on a phone, you're losing customers before they even call.

Check these basics:

  • Page load speed — test at pagespeed.web.dev. Aim for under 3 seconds on mobile.
  • Click-to-call — your phone number should be tappable on mobile
  • Easy quote request — your contact form should be simple and above the fold
  • Readable text — no pinching and zooming to read your services

Track what's working

Set up Google Search Console (free) to see which searches are bringing people to your site. Look for:

  • Which keywords are driving clicks — double down on what's working
  • Which pages are ranking — improve the ones that are close to page one
  • Click-through rate — if you're ranking but not getting clicks, improve your page titles and descriptions

A professional online presence matters. VanMan's branded booking form gives customers a seamless way to request quotes directly from your website — no clunky contact forms needed.

Local SEO isn't complicated, but it does require consistency. Set up your Google Business Profile properly, ask for reviews after every job, build citations on the major directories, and make sure your website works well on mobile. Do these things consistently and you'll be the removalist that shows up when your next customer searches.
